They'll Never See Me in Here

This yellow crowned night heron was hiding high up in the branches, standing proud but fairly still (so cooperative for us photographers). I like how the yellow crown looks like the leaves behind him. He lives among the black crowned night herons that appeared in my album a few weeks ago so it was exciting to spot him. There's a colony in the Lincoln Park Zoo but no netting or fences, so the birds have chosen to live there.
Such a beautiful bird and capture! I don't think I've ever seen one.

a good shot of this bird, who could be very camouflaged amid the leaves and branches of this tree.

Such an elegant and stately bird. Great shot!

Beautiful shot of him! Nature is amazing. How do they evolve to match their environment. We don’t do that.

Fantastic! Love how he blends in with his surroundings. Interesting that the birds choose to live at the zoo, but it makes sense.

A new one for me!

This is unlike any of the yellow crowned night herons I see in Florida. They are grey and don't have the yellow tuft at the top. Is the tuft breeding plumage? https://duckduckgo.com/?q=yellow+crowned+night+heron+bird&t=h_&iax=images&ia=images

Good detail and DoF

@falcon11 I wonder if it’s mating plumage or just the way the light was coming through the trees. Though the yellow crown is quite yellow in all the photos.

Hidden indeed! But you found him and took a nice portrait! I never saw the yellow one . . . must look more closely for the hidden ones.
