My get pushed partner this week, @mumswaby, challenged me to photograph spirals. I'm not sure if this is what she had in mind (I hope so!) but it's what I immediately thought of when she challenged me. The Rookery is a famous Chicago building, the first skyscraper to have a steel interior and masonry exterior. It was renovated by Frank Lloyd Wright at the turn of the last century with all the kinds of details you'd expect from him. This shot is looking upward to the start of a spiral staircase that starts on the 2nd floor and goes all the way to the top (10th floor). This is also the site where the Chicago Expo in the late 1800s was planned by Burnham and his team. The name comes from crows that were supposed to live in its walls (and the 'crowing politicians' of the day).

Photo is also for bw-bookclub and its discussion for this week of HDR black and white possibilities. This was combined from three bracketed images, handheld.

@mara19500 I'm so glad you made it there! It wasn't on my radar last fall for photography but I can't wait to go again in a few weeks on one of their noon tours that gets you access to the spiral staircase from above, and the Burnham library. I've never done that tour even though it's so close to where I live!
The architectural detail and the balance of the shot (not easy, I'm sure) is really impressive. Then the BW makes it a real star. That's what I've learned about BW--not good for everything, but architectural or softy flowing things, so wonderful (and so much more, but that's what I've learned so far). Great shot.
The tour is great! :) I LOVE this staircase. I can't say it was my *fave* space on the tour bc there were so many awesome photo ops. It's worth the time and the guide(s) are great.
Lloyd Wright at his best. Super FAV
