There is a music festival on Beaver Island each year called Baroque on Beaver. The name goes to its original purpose a little over a decade ago, but it has a range of types of music as it has grown over time. Last night was the benefit with the "Detroit Jazz Trio" which was a trio of three musicians who have performed internationally, but not necessarily with each other (I googled, and they are all from Michigan, but don't appear to be an ongoing group). The three, Pete Siers, Paul Keller and Tad Weed, were incredible in interpreting an evening of Duke Ellington. This scene was of the percussionist who was using a range of tools and his whole environment (including the bass, the side of his drums, the floor, the piano bench) in one of the songs featuring him. It was pretty amazing to see and hear. They had three standing ovations at the end and finally were persuaded to perform one more song following their other encores. So glad we went!
The photo was taken shooting blind (even though the challenge is over -- I just hadn't done it yet) -- had to hold my camera above my head to get over the row in front of us, and with high ISO (Camera Setting Challenge 14) -- both challenges in mind when I took my camera along.
Magnificent shot in spite of all the technical challenges! Not a big Jazz fan myself, but it sounds like something which I would have enjoyed thoroughly as well!
@susale@pamknowler@ericdibosco@ceilidh Thanks so much, Sue, Pam, Eric, and Margaret. Re shooting blind -- it wasn't as hard as it sounds. I'd taken a few other shots so knew what the settings needed to be and was in the second row so really only had to point and click a few times. This was cropped and I cloned out the part of the pianist that didn't come out.
@lubybee Forgot to tag you with my comment above...I think this is probably a bit of a 'cheat' for shooting blind, as I cloned out some of the details that distracted from these two. And I had taken a few others so knew generally where I needed to point.
Great shot! They look so similar at first I thought you'd done one of those shots where you have the same scene and a person in several different poses all around it.
Such an amazing photo, Taffy. I am getting so lost in photos posted as it seems to change somewhat and I miss photos this way. Sounds like such a wonderful time. FAV
