Pilsen has been a neighborhood of immigrants since the 1800s. Today, the dominant ethnic group is Latino and the neighborhood is site of the National Museum of Mexican Art. There are murals throughout the neighborhood and these are just a sampling. My grandson (budding photographer of night photo walk at fountain) was helping me decide which ones were 'worthy' of being in the collage and willingly, sort of, posed in one of them.
BTW, the only image I understood as representational is the famous "Chicago dog" on the middle right: NEVER with catsup, only mustard, onions, relish, tomatoes, and usually some kind of pickle. You can always tell a tourist here when they ask for a hotdog with catsup! Truth in advertising...when not in Chicago, I put catsup on mine...too embarrassed to order it that way when at home.
I love this collage! The artwork some of it is especially gorgeous and well done. A form of graffiti I'm sure but much more pleasant than the graffiti that we see in our neighborhoods consisting of curse and swear words and obscene gestures and tag names that only the tagger's seem to understand.
Great street art, wonderfully presented. I'm a New Yorker by birth and learned early to not put catsup on a hot dog. Mustard and sauerkraut is the bomb. FAV
@soboy5 I spent a lot of time in NYC area years ago, when Nathan's was a local place on the beach. I learned about mustard and sauerkraut and think it can hold its own to a Chicago dog!
Awesome shot, excellent idea to do a collage as it gives a clearer impression of the variety of street art in that neighbourhood. Is that mural of enormous rat with its middle chewed out still there? I loved Pilsen and the museum of Mexican art was wonderful. I went to Hot Dougs in Chicago and was taught what was and wasn't acceptable very quickly!
@hasselhotch Oh thank goodness I didn't see the mural of the rat!! Not to say it isn't there...I was photographing only along 8th street. Hot Dougs -- an institution! Thanks for your visit and fun comment!
Fantastic collage!! Wonderful street art!! I had never heard of the Chicago Hotdog or "dog" as you say. I would have been asking for ketchup on mine!! LOL!!
Great idea to showcase the street art in a collage! BTW, I love Chicago dogs! My sister-in-law used to have a little hot dog place at the beach that made them.
Andy posts a lot of images of London street art.
