Posted for those asking what the original flower looked like that is in main album - http://365project.org/taffy/365/2018-06-13 (so no obligation to comment!). Different view and larger bunch pictured here, but this one gives a better sense of the context and how they grow.
Beach: Bonners Landing Bay on Beaver Island, west side
@gamelee I think it is as it has a very long/deep tap root and is pretty much impossible to transplant. I'm guessing it takes years to get a healthy hold on its spot. I don't know how they prosper -- maybe the tap roots spread and create new growth. There are usually 1 to about 8 of the flowers, always isolated from other groups by at least a yard/meter or so. But they appear in just a few areas on the island, all growing in full sun and out of solely sand/beach. We never see them in shady or wooded areas.
Love it, thanks for the link. It's a resilient little thing, isn't it? I really like this shot actually Such a striking pov with the yellow foreground flower. Is that a Michigan Monkey Flower? Can't tell from this distance but I love that it springs up in seemingly inhospitable environments.
@casablanca I've heard that term before. I'll check this morning with some friends when we play golf. There are some knowledgeable folks on the island regarding the flowers - natural and gardening - and I'm not one of them!
@taffy I only know what I know, which isn't much LOL I am the same with bird calls. I went out to a reserve last year with a couple of ornithologist pals and tried really hard to listen as they seemed to hear all kinds of birds I wasn't noticing at all. At one point I said "what's that one? That's a really interesting sound....." They turned to me with exasperated compassionate looks and said "it's a duck." Aye me!!!
While I don't often get to see many photos, this shows more of your island surrounds than I've seen to date! No wonder you love it!!! How wonderful for you to settle back and have a relaxing summer there! So NOT Chicago!
