Too Heavy To Take Down

Other than oppressing his own people, Chiang Kai-Shek also liked to show his love by putting statues of himself all over Taiwan. About a decade ago when Taiwan had it's first president of the opposing political party, there was an effort made to take down most of the CKS statues that littered the island.

Where did they all go? Well the CKS's mausoleum is located in a suburb of Taipei and many of the statues were brought to rest in the surrounding park. There are about 150 statues there and while I have never been there, the pictures I have seen portray it as an eerie place covered with statues everywhere you look. Definitely a place I want to check out for myself.

One interesting note is that his tomb is a "temporary" resting place, as he left instructions to be buried back in his hometown in China, when Taiwan retakes Mainland China. His words, not mine.

As for the picture above, you can see that not all CKS statues have been taken down. This one is at the top of a mountain in Taipei. I'm guessing that it would have been just too much trouble to get it down. Which begs the question, how did they get it up there?
