I don't even know if this is a Banksia! One of my Aussie 365 friends will tell me if I'm wrong. Please do. All I can say is that with that bit sticking out the end, it must be a boy! ;-)
Looks like it is Banksia Ericafolia Terrie. There were a hundred lines I could have used re you boy Banksia comment but discretion was the better part of valour and I left them al alone. Lovely shot of Mr Banksia
@terryliv Actually, looks to me like it could be a Banksia spinulosa (Hairpin banksia). They look very much alike but their foliage is different and they're found in different parts of Oz. (Can't remember exactly where you are, Terrie, but I don't think it's that far from me and I grow them easily in my garden.) If you look at http://melbournedaily.blogspot.com.au/2014/08/melbourne-street-trees-85-hairpin.html you can see a couple of shots that have the 'rude' bit poking out at the end like yours. Whichever one it is, it's a lovely, sharp shot.
Just had a look on the TP and in the the first 13 pics are two from you, two from @hermann Sally, two from me, one from @tomtom one from @888rachel, one from @gigiflower, one from @Tracelee. We're on fire!!!!
@girlie The spinulosa has small serrated leaves and the ericafolia has rosemary type leaves. The flowers are very similar except the loopy bits (technical talk) tend to be black on the spinulosa.
@terryliv You're right, of course. I've belatedly looked at my spinulosa and it has the serrated leaves, etc. Which means that the ones in the article I mentioned must be wrongly identified.
Lovely Banksia.
