It's a boy Banksia

I don't even know if this is a Banksia! One of my Aussie 365 friends will tell me if I'm wrong. Please do. All I can say is that with that bit sticking out the end, it must be a boy! ;-)
Looks like it is Banksia Ericafolia Terrie. There were a hundred lines I could have used re you boy Banksia comment but discretion was the better part of valour and I left them al alone. Lovely shot of Mr Banksia

@terryliv Thanks Poppo, I knew I could count on you! Don't be shy with holding back comments of a naughty nature! We are all friends here on 365 ;-)

It was both sexist and racist. I'll leave you to work it out.

Amazing colours and form. Nature at it's best.

Definitely a Banksia but I'm pleased that Poppo beat me to it......with both the Botanical name and the rude comment ;)

Very funny! Lovely sharp details!

@terryliv Actually, looks to me like it could be a Banksia spinulosa (Hairpin banksia). They look very much alike but their foliage is different and they're found in different parts of Oz. (Can't remember exactly where you are, Terrie, but I don't think it's that far from me and I grow them easily in my garden.) If you look at http://melbournedaily.blogspot.com.au/2014/08/melbourne-street-trees-85-hairpin.html you can see a couple of shots that have the 'rude' bit poking out at the end like yours. Whichever one it is, it's a lovely, sharp shot.

@terryliv A bit of Aussie action. Don't forget to look out the window right now - the eclipse is happening!
October 8th, 2014
Not here its not. Covered in cloud @888rachel My night shots I was planning destroyed.
October 8th, 2014
@terryliv What?! I can see it fine, and don't have my camera set up. Actually I'm lousy at moon shots.

Sam
@terryliv You are right Poppo on 2 fronts - the Aussies on the TP and how the night shots we were both planning didn't happen :(

@girlie The spinulosa has small serrated leaves and the ericafolia has rosemary type leaves. The flowers are very similar except the loopy bits (technical talk) tend to be black on the spinulosa.

fabulous details, whatever it is!

It's a very pretty boy!
October 8th, 2014
@terryliv You're right, of course. I've belatedly looked at my spinulosa and it has the serrated leaves, etc. Which means that the ones in the article I mentioned must be wrongly identified.
