I did have a possible subject for yesterday's ANZAC day commemorations after all so I am posting today just to show that I wasn't totally devoid of the ANZAC day spirit.
I finished reading Peter Fitzsimons' account of Gallipoli a couple of weeks ago and like all of his books, it was exceedingly well researched and presented in his own style that turns a history lesson into an interesting pseudo novel.
OZ and KIWI 365ers who would like an in depth account of the Gallipoli campaign may like to grab a copy. O/S 365ers who are scratching their heads wondering what all the fuss is about, may also try to get their hands on a copy (pretty difficult I would imagine).
I am a fan of Peter Fitzsimons books. Also worth reading are "Tobruk" "Kokoda" "Mawson" and "A Simpler Time". His story of Nancy Wake and/or Batavia are next on my must read list.
I think I might hit him up for a commission. Ha Ha Ha
Now that is one very big book, I've seen it in the bookshops. Glad to hear that it is a good read though. Peter always sounds very intelligent when they interview him.
Thank you for sparking my curiosity, Terry! I am humbled to admit I had never heard of ANZAC day nor Peter Fitzsimons! What can I say? I'm from Kansas. But, now I am more aware! :)
@kareenking There was a movie directed by Peter Weir that came out in the early 80s that gave a fairly accurate portrayal on Gallipoli. The star of the movie was a very young Mel Gibson - his first starring role. As far as I am aware, the movie was given a different title in the US since they figured that no-one there had heard of Gallipoli. I can't remember what the title was though.
Book review expect Terry Livy. I say you definitely deserve a commission for all your great recommendations. I sure appreciate the one you've given me. Interesting info on Mel Gibson's first staring role. And I thought it was Mad Max...
Lovely tribute Terry will be looking this book up now, The Gallipoli campaign has also been commemorated here in the UK and especially in Lancashire as the East, West and North Lancashire Regiments took part with great lose of life:)
@leestevo What did he think of it? I thought it was excellent. A story not many of us knew much about. Apparently Batavia is very good. I have just bought a copy of Nancy Wake on e-Bay.
