I have been rabbiting on about Coober Pedy for a few days now and O/S 365ers have probably wondered what it was all about.
Coober Pedy was the largest town we encountered on the tour and is famous for two things, opals and the fact that the majority of the towns 1600 residents live underground in "Dugouts".
Because of the extreme temperatures, most houses are caves dug into the side of a hill so whatever the outside conditions, the temperature inside the house is constant at about 22deg.
Judging by the number of air vents on the hill, this is probably a fairly large four bedroom house.
Coober Pedy is aboriginal for "White Fella's Hole".
This is so interesting! I saw a "House Hunters International" about a mining town in Australia where some of the houses were in caves because of the extreme heat, but this is different from even that.
