Shearing Shed - Cordillo Downs Station 1

The shearing shed on Cordillo Downs station, about half way between Innamincka and Birdsville, was the largest in Australia. As such it was probably the largest in the world.
In the 1880s, Cordillo Downs set a record of shearing 85,000 sheep in a season.

Because of dingo attacks, Cordillo Downs switched from sheep to cattle and the shed ceased operation as a shearing shed in 1942.

Interesting shot and information. 85,000 sheep is an awful lot of sheep.

Yes, a very sturdy structure. It will be around for another 100 years!

Very interesting architecture with the buttresses, and I also like the masonry.

A lovely building - a pity it isn't used for a farm museum or suchlike.

Thanks for sharing this really interesting structure, not the type of architecture I associate with shearing sheds. Love the rock work and buttresses, I imagine it would have been a lot cooler to work in. Nice pic Poppo :)

A really interesting looking building, with the sloped roof.

Wow, that is a flash shearing shed. My dad and brother were shearers but I don't think they would have ever seen anything like this. Fabulous shot.
