The Evil Eye by terryliv

The Evil Eye

Another shot of the Stone Curlew with the evil eye from golf on Monday. See the pic in my main album at http://365project.org/terryliv/365/2014-09-22

When approached, the Curlew will sometimes just walk away and at other times will go into freeze mode and lie perfectly still.
If there is a nest or chicks involved, they will "attack" which involves spreading their wings (probably up to about 1.5m), lowering their head and making a quite loud hissing/growling noise as this guy is doing as they walk towards you.
But it's all show and no go. It's a long story but I have been on the receiving end of their "attacks" on numerous occasions.
Hopefully I can show you them nesting in the next couple of months. In case you haven't guessed, I love them.
As always, best on black
Another Fav.

He is a beautiful bird! he certainly doesn't look impressed, but I love his spindly legs :) Sounds a bit like the plovers here that are very protective of their ground and will attack! Great shot.

I would love to see one of these birds in the wild Terry as I have only seen them in Taronga Zoo. Nice capture and lovely details.
