For some reason or other, probably associated with the weather, the fancy leaf Vrieseas have all gone psycho and are flowering prematurely, one or two years before they are fully grown when they should flower. The growers I spoke to at the two recent shows were all experiencing the same thing.
This may seem like a good thing but it is not. There are two broad groups of Vriesea, The plain green leaf varieties grown for their flowers and the fancy leaf varieties grown for their foliage. The flowers on the fancy leaf ones are very ordinary and once they have flowered, the plant basically dies.
So I have got all these plants that are now in flower ahead of their time and which will now start to die off without ever reaching their potential beauty.
Hopefully they throw lots of pups before they kark it.
There's such a variety of shapes and designs in these blooms. Bummer about them blooming much too soon. You have an impressive garden, Terry. It's like a park!
