As I said in the shot in my main album, I wanted to focus on the galahs so here is Mr Galah. We know it is a male because of the colour of the eye. Males have a black eye while the female has a pinky red eye.
Before one of my country friends has a shot at me, I should point out for O/S 365ers that galahs are regarded as a pest in many parts of Oz because of the damage they can do to grain crops. I think they are lovely. They waddle around the back yard like fat old men. Hang on!!! . . . .
Just thought in Neighbours or maybe Home and Away someone always says "Flaming Galah" perhaps it's the colour or maybe the fact you say they are a pest!!
wonderful shot of him and an instant fav. Cockies aren't usually too well liked either are they? I've heard that they attack part of people's houses. Is that right?
Absolutely brilliant photo of this gorgeous bird. Hard to believe something this beautiful could be a pest, but then I live with parrots so know how much damage they can do in little to no time at all, and that's under supervision. Can't imagine what that beak, left unchecked, could do with lots of free time.
@pamknowler Hi Pam. Galahs always appear to be a little crazy. They are quite slow flyers with a loping type of wing beat and they seem to change direction, both vertically and horizontally repeatedly and at random as if they have no idea where they are going.
@rosiekind Hi Rosie, yes they are notorious for eating the woodwork around peoples homes, or anywhere for that matter.
A very friendly white cocky suddenly appeared at our place about 3 years ago and helped himself to the food we had out for the rainbow lorries. Within days, we had a whole flock of them hanging around.
Even though we knew their reputation, we couldn't help ourselves and put more food out for them.
At the time I made a comment to the kids that this whole thing was going to end in tears but 3 years down the track and they have behaved impeccably. Not a single demolition effort from any of them and they are here in varying numbers every day. In the meantime they have given us many hours of amusement and enjoyment watching their antics.
So I honestly don't know what to think about it all now!!!
Also they are extremely noisy and you can see people comments re the noise they make but that is another weird thing here. We can go outside and there will be half a dozen of them hanging around the back yard and we never knew they were there. Occasionally they will call out when they fly over but that is all. Weird
What a wing span!
