Good Bye to Coober Pedy

Well this is actually the welcome sign for the town but because we came in on one of the back roads, we didn't see it coming in.

This contraption is an icon of the town and is called a "Blower". Every second house has one in the back yard.
It is a huge vacuum cleaner that is used to suck the rocks out of the underground excavations and deposit them on the surface. It draws the rocks through a large flexible hose for a distance of up to 30 metres.

What an interesting place it is. I cycled past there on my way from Darwin to Adelaide.

@shirleybankfarm We were given a demo of one in action Shirley.
Firstly, it is very noisy
If you held a rock weighing a few kilos about 30cm in front of the hose, it would suck it out of your hand and deposit it out the back with ease. Surprisingly effective.
