We hadn't seen any camels at all on the tour until the last morning on the run up to Alice Springs on the Stuart Highway.
Australia has the world's largest population of wild camels and they are considered a pest in many parts of the outback
I know the feral camel population has been reduced over the last few years, but there must be still at least 300,000 of the buggers around and you can only find one!
@shirleybankfarm Camels were initially brought into Oz from The Middle East in the 1860s and of course were then bred in Oz Shirley. Camels played a major role in the exploration and development of the Outback until they were replaced by motor vehicles in the 1920s. The camels were set free and being ideally suited to conditions, their numbers grew and they became a burden on the fragile environment of the Outback. In 2008, it was estimated that there were about 1million feral camels in Oz.
@terryliv Thanks for the information Terry. I am loving this site for this very reason. I am learning so much from all over the world as well as seeing so many new things through the eyes of lovely people.
