This is why we have a screened in area on our back deck.
This is a red-footed cannibalfly (Promachus rufipes), also called the "bee panther." My references says it gets to be 1 1/3 inches long (35 mm), but it looked much, much bigger.
This one was hanging out on the screen on our deck and waited patiently as I took my pictures before it flew off in search of its next meal.
