About a mile from my house there is a large beaver pond caused by beavers damming the Great Branch Creek. From the looks of things, the beavers left this pond a long time before we moved to Virginia, three years ago. Despite the absence of beavers, their work lives on and the pond is thriving.
Today, the Missus and I were were running errands when we drove past the beaver pond. I spotted this, turned around, found a place to park, and walked along the road to get this shot.
While I was there, I also got the shots posted in my Ecletica and Other Other albums.
@maggiemae They are unbelievably strong. Beavers are incredible engineers. Their dams are constructed so well that wolves and coyotes cannot breach them. It's what keeps the beavers safe from predators...they create a small lake and build their lodges in the middle, with underwater entrances, so that predators can't get them. Out west, the dams are so big and strong that if a farmer wants to get rid of them to reclaim the underwater land, they have to use dynamite.
