Woodette by timerskine

Woodette

Saw this pileated woodpecker (Dryocopus pileatus) while walking along the James River today. I was going to name this picture Woody until I realized that this is a female...the cheek stripe (the line of feathers right behind the bill) is red in males.
What a stunner! Super capture.

Ahhh Tim, this is one of my top to-get birds! We are partners again for Get Pushed. How about having a go at rim lighting? Here’s a little guider - https://digital-photography-school.com/rim-light-powerful-images-single-flash/ Enjoy!

How lucky you are to have spotted this bird. Fantastic detail you've captured.

Great markings and colours. How big is it?

@jon_lip They are big. Wingspan is 26.0-29.5 in / 66-75 cm. So when you're busy tracking sparrows, finches and wrens, one of these swooping in is kind of hard to miss.

@tinley23 @selkie @ricksnap @sprphotos @bkbinthecity @dutchothotmailcom @amyk @serendypyty Thanks! She was really obvious when flying by but bended in really well on the tree - even with a bright red Mohawk - so that a couple of people passing by didn't see what I was shooting.
