Cape Henry Lighthouse by timerskine

Cape Henry Lighthouse

This is the Cape Henry lighthouse located on, of all places, Cape Henry. It marks the point where the Atlantic Ocean and Chesapeake Bay meet.

Completed in 1792, this lighthouse was the very first federally-funded public works project. It was authorized by George Washington and overseen by Alexander Hamilton. It was in use until 1881 when the "new" Cape Henry lighthouse was completed and put into service.

The Missus and I visited the lighthouse with our son. As we walked around the area where we were allowed to walk (this is on a Navy base) I looked up to see the sun right behind the top of the tower.

My August 16 picture was of both lighthouses from a boat out in the Atlantic.
You have included some great information.
