Waitangi Greeting   by tonydebont

Waitangi Greeting

These two provided a traditional greeting as we came ashore at the Waitangi Wharf in the Bay of Islands on the North Island of New Zealand.

This was our last port of call and we are now en route to Sydney with three nights and two days of steady sailing ahead of us.

It has been a great cruise and a most enjoyable Christmas.

Priceless expressions

Maybe they don't like visitors as that might just scare some people away. Nice shot of them

@tonydebont - See any albatross?

@bobfoto Not that I recognised Jason. We didn't spend much time outside due to the blustery weather.

Great capture Tony - the Maori tradition is to greet everyone in this way - if the visitors turn tail and run the hunt is on! They value courage above all else! The full formal challenge involves the use of a spear and much threatening.

@kittikat Thanks Kitti, this was shot by Jenny on the little Lumix. We had the full greeting in Rotarua (?) back in 1998. Great that they've managed to maintain so many of their customs.
