129 Great Sphinx of Giza

Great Sphinx of Giza - Cairo, Egypt.

The giant Sphinx statue near the Great Pyramids in Egypt.

The Great Sphinx of Giza is a limestone statue of a reclining sphinx, a mythical creature with the body of a lion and the head of a human - said to represent the Pharaoh Khafre.

Facing from West to East, the Sphinx stands on the Giza Plateau on the west bank of the River Nile in Giza; just ouside of Cairo, the capital of Egypt.

I chose to compose the Sphinx's head tightly with the Great Pyramid of Giza (Pyramid of Cheops) in the background.

The capital of the Old Kingdom of Egypt is registerd on the UNESCO World Heritage List as 'Memphis and its Necropolis – the Pyramid Fields from Giza to Dahshur'.

Buses go to Giza from Cairo although many tourists choose to go on an orgaised tour or hire a private driver to reach the site in comfort.
