ANZAC stands for the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps. Since 25th April 1916 Australians and New Zealanders have made the day a time to commemorate the sacrifices of war. The first ANZAC Day commemorated the efforts made by the ANZACs to take the Gallipoli Peninsular and move on to take Constantinople (Istanbul). The campaign was a failure with over 22 000 allied soldiers making the ultimate sacrifice in the attempt. However while defending their Ottoman Empire the Turks lost 87 000. Eight months is all it took.
"They will grow not old as we who are left grow old,
Age shall not weary them nor the years condemn
At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them. ~Laurence Binyon
ANZAC day is comemorated also here. Malta served as a military hospital for many Australian/New Zealand soldiers who fought in that war and there are many buried at Ta' Braxia Cemetary.
