The young heifers gathered on the fence line to see what this crazy woman was doing out in the paddocks at sunset. Two swarms of buffalo flies circled above them and were silhouetted against the sky. These flies were accidently imported into Australia in the late nineteenth century and have spread across the continent causing much stress to cattle with their constant biting. Farmers can either spray insecticides on the cattle or attach ear tags which release chemicals for a period of about 16 weeks to control the fly. Ours are obviously loosing their effectiveness and the heifers are needing to be treated again judging by the size of these swarms.
Great timing. You got the sun just as it peeped over the edge of the mountain. Those flies are amazing. They must be large to show up so well on the picture. I'd hate having to deal with that. We fight ticks and mosquitoes here.
