There Goes Christmas Dinner

A wedge-tailed eagle swooped in at midday and helped himself to one of the half grown turkey poults. His eyes were to big for his belly as they say and he couldn't lift himself into the air. He had to eventually drop his catch but it was too late for the little turkey.
you sure did catch him at it.

Wow - nature red in tooth and claw and all that. Poor turkey.

Astonishing that you caught this capture. Fast moving birds are a challenge.

@glendq @judithg @maggiemae @ethelperry You can be lucky sometimes. I was just leaving the house to go to bowls when I spotted him down on the ground at the front gate. So grabbed the camera and keys and found he was still on the road way when I came out. As he tried to get airborne the other birds attacked him. The roadway is about half a km long so I was able to catch a couple of shots through the windscreen before he dropped his catch and flew away across the farm.

Ha ha Sorry Margaret but that is funny although I am sure you didn't think so. Very opportunistic catch if you'll pardon the pun.
Actually, I am a bit surprised that you have WT Eagles. I would have thought that you would be too close to the coast.

I'm astounded by your photo and story, and saddened by the loss of the little turkey. Shame on that eagle for not eating everything on its plate.

Great capture and focusing.

That's nature for you.......he had sharp eyes but a shame the Turkey was killed for nothing although no doubt there would be plenty more to eat what was there on the road. Sharp with your camera there! I saw lots of turkeys in NZ but my son said they weren't fit to eat....full of worms apparently. Not like our Christmas turkeys here.

I've been watching your turkeys with a keen eye, having once raise them and knowing how hard the are to keep alive. Shame about this one but you are doing well with them

Mother Turkey has a lot of poults to care for. She will have to be vigilant for the next few weeks. You were in the right spot at the right time - great action shot.

A sad but true facet of Mother Nature. Your story reminds me of the time the Red-shouldered Hawk picked off a Mourning Dove at our feeder.
