Queenie is our special Calliope Central Bowls club mascot. She is worth $30 000 - the cost associated with breeding and training a guide dog in Queensland. We have a blind bowler in our club and Queenie is his eyes. She travelled to Monto with us yesterday and found the day very hot just like the rest of inland Queensland which is suffering a heat wave at present. Today's forecast is for 40 degrees - a record for October if the forecasted temperatures are reached.
Oh, good dog, Queenie! Our lab gets hot very easily as well. I think it's because they have that undercoat to protect them in the water. I'm trying to wrap my brain around the idea of a blind bowler. He must have a profound sense of direction.
@mbemis Yes, a blind bowler is an incredible concept. He has to depend on having enough vision to position of his feet correctly and he needs to know the distance his bowl has to travel. When he knows this he knows how much weight to place on his draw. He is incredibly accurate. He has enough vision to determine where his feet are. But yesterday there was so much glare he could not distinguish his shoes from the mat and had great difficulty and the position of his feet determines the width of the bowls path. Because he could not see his feet he could not direct his bowl correctly and found the day very frustrating.
40deg is an awesome heat so early....Queenie looks so lovely & not suffering too much in the heat. Fascinating info on your blind bowler...I have just read it out to Harry as he is a bowler..of sorts!!
