Today was another day at sea. In the morning we cruised through Dampier Strait from the Solomon Sea into the Bismark Sea. Mid afternoon found us passing Unea Island one of the volcanic Ocean peaks that rise up out of the sea and form the Vitu group of islands. In the early 20th century Unea had some of the biggest copra plantations in New Guinea. There were a predominance of women on the island. Thus wife raids were a feature of the period when men from neighbouring islands would come ashore to take themselves a bride -literally.
