Exploring

The turkey chicks born last week to two of my turkey hens have dwindled down to six - a number which it seems two hens working together can protect from predators. These three have been allowed to adventure out about a yard away from their very protective mothers to do a little exploring on their own. But not for long. As soon as I was spotted all were quickly called back to walk under their mothers protected from above by their big umbrella bodies.
They are so sweet, and I love your description of the protective behavior.

Now what would take a turkey chick.....have you foxes or perhaps snakes or just a large bird? Cute striped backs!

@happypat yes foxes but they take the mothers while they are sitting. I lost six in a week earlier in the month. The chicks fall prey to the other turkeys, crows, kookaburras and wild cats.
