I had two candidates today for the upload, and went back and forth and back and forth with the family on which picture to upload. Finally, decided on this one, as it looked more exciting to me. On a walk up to the Castle "Weibertreu" in Weinsberg, Germany.
As always, comments, suggestions and critique is very much appreciated. Thank you for viewing!
Although this is a beautifully exposed shot, I do feel you could have cropped in much closer. The subject is the spider web, so for me, this should be where the emphasis is. All the greenery and lichen is secondary and detracts from the subject matter (the spiders web). Try re-cropping much closer and see what you think.
Am I being picky? Probably, But I love it when people critique (not criticise) my shots, this way I can take on board what they say and improve my photography - it's the best way for us all to get better.
First of all, thank you, Rob, for taking time to view and think about the picture - this helps a lot. So, feel free to stop by and be picky any time. That's why I jointed the site - to hear what others would think and see how I could improve what I do. So for this, huge thanks!
For the cropping - "Great minds think a like!" :) in fact, I did try to crop it tighter, but for my taste, it left me with too much of a white blob, as there was not much contrast with the rest of the image. I wish I had more detail in the middle of the web so that It does not appear as a blob, but it was a very overcast day, and I had to do the shot hand-held, so I needed a pretty wide aperture. This is why the DOF is not covering the whole web, turing the middle into a mess of white. I wish I could have captured little droplets of water throughout - then it would have made it a better subject by itself, I think. Also, there are "strings" that go from the middle of the web to the edges of the current frame, and when I cropped it too tight, I lost some of them too, which I thought were a part of the whole structure and should have been in the picture.
But - again, thank you for your comment and for taking time to comment so thoughtfully! I will be looking forward for more input as the days come! :)
Thank, Junko. I was happy to find it, and my son was pretty excited too - for once seeing for himself why I am always stopping and lagging behind to take a picture of something on our walks! @jyokota
