Founded in 11th century, but also famous for being in the hands of Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester in 16th century who was the host for Queen Elisabeth there for 19 days, trying to convince her to marry him. The day was glorious after a whole night of monsoon rains - which made it great to photograph the castle with all those giant puddles everywhere. And then back to London for another couple of days before leaving for home.
Gorgeous! I'm reading a biography of Simon de Montfort, in which he stays at this castle with his family for some time, so its wonderful to see it. Fav!
