I have been searching for one of these guys! It is a warm fall eve tonight and so the front door was opened for a cool fresh breeze and suddenly I noticed something on the stair railing...I knew right off by the silhouette what it was and I ran for my camera! So HAPPY!!! Sorry, you don't get the sunrise that I was going to post.
This one is brown because it is dry right now...when it is wet, they are green.
They're "uniquely-built" creatures, aren't they! Great capture, Vicki! Even better magnified and you were fortunate to get a nicely-neutral background, too!!
@ososki I looked it up on Google and Wikipedia and read a few articles. They all said that it was camo...brown when dry, wet is green...but a couple had pictures of green ones that were female...so I really am not positive. It did say that it was not true about the female biting off the male's head after mating. They now believe that it is only because of stress due to the observers that were studying their habits.
@ladyjane I didn't know that until I looked it up to answer a question my friend asked about why the one she shot in another state was green and mine was brown..still not sure... except it does seem valid since we have been really dry all of August and Sept.
