At the same little lake in Reno, NV where I found the swan, a local woman doing her morning walk pointed out some Black Crowned Night Herons roosting in the trees. As I stalked beneath the trees to get some shots of them, I drew a bit of attention from the people who were passing by. They would stop and stare upwards, not knowing what they were looking for, some would get excited and call their friends to see, others just shrugged and kept on walking. This shot does not show it, but they have a few long feathers that hang down their backs. They are smaller than the usual heron we see around. Also, up in the tree with these 3 adults was an immature one, they are spotted brown.
Fabulous. He definitely doesn't look as if he goes hungry!! How did he ever let you get this close to him...... or do you have a "bird watching" zoom lens!?
