What trees see when they dream of heaven... by vignouse

What trees see when they dream of heaven...

This is another experiment for the Sandbox365 theme Textures. I wanted to create an image which was essentially trees and the heavens and then I got to thinking about the trees dreaming during their winter sleep of an eventual tree heaven (I know, I should either get out more or take more water with it!). So here are the trees with a radial wood texture creating pathways leading to the heavens above. Whatever the end result, it was good practice and fun to do.
Very cool photo Richard, love how the texture is reaching heavenward!

Great processing and I love the concept

This gives the effect of the landscape being in a huge dome! Like the one in London for plants and creatures!

It reminds me of a reptilian skin about to shed! Hopefully whatever is behind the skin is spring like! :)

I think the cold winter has gotten to you! Just kidding. Nice experiment.

So creative, and beautiful result.

Superb processing

Very creative and lovely result. I am really enjoying seeing how people are interpreting the sandbox365-textures challenge. :)

And very effective too. Don't know what sand box textures are, but will look them up. Sound like my sort of thing! Fav

interesting

What a cool shot and POV - love this Richard!

Cool composition, textures, tones and neat perspective

That is very deep! I like the textures very much. I shall have to give it a try!

It does look like a dome. But did you have some whisky before you came up with the explanation.
January 30th, 2015
This is awesome! Very nicely done. What would be in tree heaven?

This is a great result for this theme. I appreciate your planning before you even set out on the creative side. It also woks well in mono - in fact I can't imagine it any other way. Yes, it is a fun thing to do, but so many options.

I like experimenting with textures and cant wait to get back into it. I like your tree and heaven theme and think you are tapping into the 'dreamtime' :) This reminded me a bit of chemtrail conspiracy to look at.

@ludgate Ask a tree perhaps?
January 30th, 2015
@joansmor During, but as it happens, every word is a true record of the thought process I went through to arrive at this image. It's worse than you thought... and I note that you don't like this textured image any better than my first attempt!

@vignouse Well you have lots here who do. Just not my cuppa. But I am thrilled to see you trying it. When I took a class on this our assignment one week was to take pictures of textures. Opens your eyes to a lot of things.
January 30th, 2015
@joansmor I took the images for both of the textures I used this week immediately after I took the images themseves, expressly to use with those images, it wasn't just random experimentation.

Brilliant! I love the textures! I need to get out of my comfort zone and try some creative shots/editing!

super interesting shot and determined work/push in your work..

very nice

this is lovely! there's something a tiny bit magical about this... a quiet kind of enchantment... i do quite like it!
January 30th, 2015
Looks other worldly, I like it a lot.
January 30th, 2015
My first reaction was that I wasn't sure that the texture improved the image However, after reading your very thorough explanation of what your thought process was in creating the image-the use of the texture was very successful.

Great processing and result

I like this very much - texture made me look and think - I like a photo that challenges my thinking.

It looks like a magic forest. I wonder though if it'd look even better if those wider bands were not quite as dark...

@whimsicalgrateful I agree with you Marta, as so often happens when one tries something new, the idea was reasonably sound but the execution leaves something to be desired! This is is how we learn: by getting it wrong, by missing the mark and, most importantly of all, by listening to feedback and acting on it. Thank you.

@barbiws Your first instinct was right I think, Barbara - see my comment to Marta just above this one.

Richard I hope you will click on the link. It is the class I took in blending, You can see how pictures can be enhanced with blending and textures. Her stuff makes most I have seen, including mine, look newbie-ish. http://digitalscrapper.com/classes/the-art-of-blending/
January 30th, 2015
@joansmor OK - I read it all (despite having to wade through waist deep treacly marketing hype!) and there's no doubt that she creates some amazing digital art... but I don't think this is where I want to go with my photography. I understand why you would see the benefit in these techniques because you originally came to photography to help improve your scrapping... I don't see myself becoming a scrapper. I decided to have a try at textures because it is the current Sandbox365 theme; my two experiences have confirmed for me that it requires an eye and a conception that I don't have... mine just look gimmicky! Nothing ventured, nothing gained, but (if I can ever find the time) I need to do a lot more 'off-line' experimenting with this technique before I inflict my efforts on 365ers again! Thanks, as always, for your help.

@vignouse It is about marketing, but I just wanted you to see why I haven't loved your textures. And you are right these work for cards and scrapbooking more than photos. And it takes an eye. I can do some things I am happy with but nothing I do all the time. But it is a good lesson because knowing how to manipulate layers is important. Blending is the big thing. Take a dull picture make a duplicate layer and change that layer to something like overlay and it becomes amazing.
January 30th, 2015
@joansmor I agree that understanding blend modes is important - this is my favourite tutorial on the subject - http://photoblogstop.com/photoshop/photoshop-blend-modes-explained

Just added to my list. Always up for learning more.

I like the concept. My first thought was that trees dream of onion skins. Then I read the text and saw that there is a great relation between treesa dn onion skins!

super clever texturing.

A neat result - great idea!
