Lac de Guerlédan: Lock & Lock-keeper's Cottage

Many of you have asked to see more views of this drained reservoir with the valley once more revealed after 83 years of being submerged - new viewers will find it helpful to check my yesterday's 365 post first for the full story.

This image shows the remains of one of the 18 locks, together with the ruins of the lock-keepers cottage. The trees to the left of the cottage are the remains of the orchard with the vegetable garden to the left foreground of the photo. A mutually beneficial trade operated between the bargees and the lock-keepers: fish and whatever the barge was carrying - grain, coal, etc - was exchanged for vegetables and fresh fruit. Finally, the petrified trees on the right line and protect the causeway and bridge which provided access to the cottage by land. All of these remains have spent the last 83 years submerged.

Viewing on black recommended...

A weird and alien landscape - wonderful shot of this valley fished out of the deep to lie belly up, so to speak, for a gasping breath in time.

@joansmor Well being submerged under 40 metres of water for 80+ years is a touch devastating I would say Joan ;-)

@vignouse True, but no people where threatened at least. Though that is probably not totally true as they did have to give up their homes.
June 12th, 2015
What a fascinating sight and story. I'm surprised that any of the brickwork held together

Magnificent!

@888rachel They built to last 150-200 years ago - the locks are in perfect condition other than the gates which are still there in many of the locks but the iron work is very corroded, as you would expect. What surprised me was the good condition of the trees and shrubs - they show no sign of having spent that much time under the water,

@dorsethelen Oh great, you'll love it. It was still looking very lunar on Wednesday but Mother Nature was already hard at work so in a month's time I'm guessing it will be green and verdant everywhere... this is pretty rich soil.

Beautiful and it does have the WOW factor, Richard!
