Abbaye de Bon Repos at Saint-Gelven, Brittany. by vignouse

Abbaye de Bon Repos at Saint-Gelven, Brittany.

This is the Cistercian Abbaye de Bon Repos (Abbey of Good Rest) founded 23 June 1184 by Viscount Alain III of Rohan who fell asleep on this spot after a tiring day hunting, which gave rise to the Abbey's name. Legend has it that the Virgin Mary came to him in his dreams and asked him to found an Abbey on this spot, which he duly did.

The Abbey was abandoned at the time of the French Revolution and was subsequently looted and vandalised. It stood in ruins for many years until a collective of local people raised enough money to restore part of the building and the site is now used for art exhibitions, a weekly farmers' market and, in July and August, a spectacular Son et Lumière show. The buildings on the bank of the river - the Blavet - are a reconstruction of the medieval village that was here when the Abbey was founded.
The architecture looks very English to me- what you might see in Yorkshire! So good that history is preserved and people can learn and be interested!

@my_photofun You have a good eye Darinka; I find that greens are often a bit overpowering in digital images and can look unreal so yes, I desaturated the image a bit. I don't know if this is anything to do with the fact that in the classic Bayer Array that most camera sensors use, there are two green photsites for every red and blue one, but it's a possibility I suppose.

They say that if you visit Europe you will realize that the history periods in the state are nothing compared to Europe. Beautiful shot and so well processed.

Great shot Richard, ruined abbeys are something Ireland and Brittany have in common. The Celts liked an abbey...fav shot...

A lovely sense of history in this shot. The story behind it is fascinating, as are the buildings, which are beautifully presented. I also find interesting your comments about green looking somewhat unreal when processed digitally in camera sensors. I had not realized that the sensor array was organized thusly, so thank you!
