St Sauveur, Locminé by vignouse

St Sauveur, Locminé

Today's motorbike ride took me to the old Breton town of Locminé where the parish church of St. Sauveur - St. Saviour - is rather unusual. In 1972 the Mayor and Town Council decided that the parish church had become so shabby and dilapidated that it should be torn down and rebuilt. The front facade consisting of the front of the chapel of St. Colomban and the front of the church of St. Sauveur were so much of a local landmark though that it was decided to retain them but build a modern church behind. This is the interior of the new church which opened its doors in 1975. The stained glass in the roof-light and the vertical window in the choir are both from the original church building.

You can see outside views showing old and new together here: http://365project.org/vignouse/a-year-of-days/2015-08-21 and here: http://365project.org/vignouse/doubletakes/2015-08-21

This is rather stunning viewed on black I think...
Its always interesting what they come up with for a modern place of worship! So different from the old. This one has great light! I can just see you riding along on your flash motorbike deciding where to stop!

Stunning modern church, beautifully photographed Richard

That's amazing! There's almost no blending of styles, aside from the repurposed stained glass. What a concept! Beautiful shot, BTW.

Fantastic architectural elements here -- and great use of distortion to create the composition. Fav -- the lines are intriguing and compel me to look at it from all different angles. And again, thanks so much for your vote of confidence on my shot this week. I'm not able to spend much time on 365 at the moment, but when I saw the emails, it really made my day!

@taffy The 'distortion' was not entirely my doing! The benches to the right are square to the central aisle; the benches to the left are angled at about 30 deg which is what creates the effect. It's a fascinating building.

Definitely an interesting building, although I find it cold and impersonal in contrast to the older much less modern churches that seem to be warn and comforting.

@janiskay It was very light, calm and peaceful inside... some of the old stone-built churches can be very dark and oppressing, I find.

@vignouse perhaps but I love them especially with some of the stained glass. I am not much on modern. Although I do like modern conveniences. ;-)

Those stain glass panels are wonderful. I'm not crazy about modern but its a lovely capture of this interesting mix of old and new.

As I look at this I can't help but wonder how the parishioners embraced the "new look" of their place of worship.

Fantastic

Wow, I think it's beautiful!

have to confess I don't normally like modern Church interiors but this one is full of interest. Thank you for posting the exterior views as well. So glad they retained so much of the original walls.Fav

Like it very much. Reminds me of the Catholic Church at the Link Centre, Swindon. Modern, deafeningly quiet and exuding peace.

Wow, very original church! Not easy to get a good shot, but you did well!

Impressive church Richard. Good pov to get so much in

Love the angles, the lines, the light, the wood, the colours. Beautiful church, beaut shot.

Great light, repetition, clean lines...almost looks a bit austere but the light adds warmth

@seattlite Quite often, with some of the magnificent older churches, you enter and are immediately overwhelmed by the atmosphere of the place to the extent that you can only stop in awe and drink it all in. This is the first modern church that has had that effect on me - in reality, the austerity is perceived rather as unadorned simplicity.

Great lines and light

love the light soaked room
August 22nd, 2015
Wow, what a massive number of lines

I go to write a comment and then find I need to go back up and have another look at the photo. Such interesting angles in the benches, the ceiling, and depth in the front of the sanctuary. Wonderful lighting.

@lyndemc I was going to post this in B&W but Mrs S favoured the colour version - I should have stuck to my guns!
August 22nd, 2015
The convergence of lines is terrific, great composition!
August 22nd, 2015
@vignouse Ah but we'd have missed out on the stained glass colors which is honestly a strong point of the color version. The B&W view would likely be interesting in a whole new way tho.
August 23rd, 2015
@lyndemc It was the stained-glass windows that Mrs S liked too! It's strange, I go for days when I have very clear ideas about what I want to photograph and how... then I seem to lose my way for a day or two.
August 23rd, 2015
@vignouse You, loosing your way? Doesn't appear evident in the least.

@lyndemc Well thank you... I must be like the duck gliding serenely across the pond then while underneath the water, it is paddling ten to the dozen!
