A Year of Days: Day 262: Notre-Dame-de-la-Cale

About half a kilometre from our campsite in Dieulefit is the supermarket and opposite to that is the cemetery, so when I was out getting groceries this afternoon, I took the opportunity to have a look round.

The cemetery is dominated by the ruined church of Notre-Dame-de-la-Cale. The cemetery dates from the middle ages but there is evidence of a church on this site from around the end of the first millennium. The church has been both protestant and catholic at different periods of its existence: it fell into disuse after the construction of the present church of St Roch in the town centre.
Mitzi and I had a tour of the graveyard earlier in the week, albeit the very old graves so didn't have this view. I find graveyards very peaceful, affirming and places of great comfort. Like this view of the graves we didn't visit.

@s4sayer I love old cemeteries. They make me wonder about the lives that were lead sets my mind to imagining I once asked my parents "Who killed them all?" Think they were stumped for an answer.
