PLAY January - Nikon 50mm f/1.4G: Boss! by vignouse

PLAY January - Nikon 50mm f/1.4G: Boss!

Thirty, forty, fifty years ago when you bought a 35mm SLR film camera, it came as standard with a 50mm lens... probably a f/1.8. In the beginning, you couldn't buy a consumer zoom lens and when they did become available, they had a very limited zoom range, were of poor optical quality and very, very expensive. So, the ubiquitous 50mm was pressed into service to produce a wide variety of images from landscapes to portraits and everything else in between... which is how it earned its soubriquet "The Nifty Fifty".

For this month of 100% 50mm shots, I hope to showcase some of its versatility. Today I've produced what is known as a pack-shot as used in advertising and publicity. One might say that the title 'Boss' applies just as much to the lens as the product!

This is for my PLAY project - you can read more about it in my profile - where I'll be using a different prime lens for each month of the year: in January it's the Nikon 50mm f/1.4G on a full-frame camera (the D610 today).

Curiously, the slight discolouration of the background at bottom left - which is not there in my original image - disappears when you view this on black!

Footnote: a number of people have asked how I made this image so I have posted a 'making of' shot here - http://365project.org/vignouse/doubletakes/2017-01-05
superb shot, all it needs is some witty slogan about smelling so good that you'll be irresistible to the ladies

Excellent shot...I really enjoy the camera/lens background information for your project. I am so bad at using a camera and not knowing all that I should know about it.

Great shot Richard - definitely looks like it comes from an ad campaign

@claycameras @skipt07 Carissa and Skip, you were both kind enough to Fav this image but I accidentally deleted it when trying to amend the narrative and so lost your Favs. Could I ask if you would both be kind enough to press the little star again as I feel really bad about my silly mistake... thank you both in anticipation. ;-)

@vignouse - Done Richard!

From my research (you are determined to teach this month, aren't you) I do believe you have achieved all the elements of a good pack-shot.

Boss, indeed! I think you could sell this to the Boss!

@skipt07 @claycameras Thank you both for your prompt responses ;-))

@randystreat Kathy you're a star! I do seem to have ticked most of the packshot checkboxes... but more by luck than judgement I think: you'd be horrified if you saw the raw-file of this image!

I will re-comment if you don't mind. Excellent composition Richard. This would work well for an advertisement!

Excellent. You're the Boss!

@vignouse I'm a bit late to actually post my comment, but of course! I'm happy to have this stellar shot back in my favs :)

What mastery!

I really, really like this and I wonder if you'd share how you achieved it? I've checked the Exif information, but I need more! Very, very cool image.

Great product shot - worthy of a place in a magazine.

definitely admiring that white background.

28mm is my favourite prime; but maybe I'll have to rediscover the 50 (for me it's an in-between when I can't make 28 or 85 aren't quite getting me there. Very good shot, BTW -- you've made it look easy.

Fab, Richard. Real quality. Fav.

Fabulous image. I really need to play with my 50mm lens to learn how to get the most out of it. I will be watching your post with much interest :)

@seattlite @randystreat @jyokota @skipt07 @jamibann @jocasta @francoise @scotthouston @365projectorgsebgritt @merrelyn @paul10 Thank you all for kind comments about something that started out as a quick and dirty experiment but grew legs! I've posted a 'making of' image here: http://365project.org/vignouse/doubletakes/2017-01-05 which will explain how this image came to pass!

Brilliant work, getting this creation from the original image. Thanks for the sharing the 'how'. It's always interesting to hear (or rather, read) about the process.

Your comment about a recognizable style that has appeal, well, that a Fav! Thanks for sharing that confidence booster. You've done that a number of times for my project; it's much appreciated.

How did I miss this! Neat bottle
January 7th, 2017
Yes, you certainly are displaying the versatility of the 50mm, Richard. I'm really enjoying it. You are now allowed to make full use of software (unless there is a rule that I missed?) so you could have taken out that stain! But the Boss bottle is so strong that my eyes are in no hurry to look elsewhere!

amazing going back and forth between the two!
January 7th, 2017
@yrhenwr Thanks David: no, no restrictions on processing this year... but that stain is not there on the Jpeg that I uploaded - I presume it's a conversion artefact.
