Smoking on North Sherwood Street by vikdaddy

Smoking on North Sherwood Street

I've always been a big fan of street photography. It's something I haven't done enough, mainly because I don't get out on to the streets with my camera often but also because I get a bit nervous taking random snaps of strangers! However today I was walking back to my car after a workout, so I took out my camera. The first and only photo I took was something I was quite pleased with as I took it quickly, hoping that today's subjects were not watching what I was doing.

I don't think it's an amazing shot, but what I'm pleased about is the speed with which I composed it. I'm definitely going to attempt some more street shots over the coming weeks. In post-processing I deliberated between going for the classic gritty black and white image, but I quite like the colour from the street lights on the damp pavement.

North Sherwood Street is notorious for a number of things. Suman briefly lived further up this road when she was a student with her best friend, and apparently they always saw pimps and prostitutes. In fact, I remember briefly stopping once in my car to check a map, and getting a knock on my window from one of the 'ladies of the night'. I'm not making a judgement on the so-called oldest profession in history, I'm just providing some anecdotes! Another time one of their friends had her car window smashed by a thief.

Another interesting story is that the pub in this photo has a flat upstairs, and in 2008 a man from Germany stabbed a Nottingham student to death after becoming infatuated with his girlfriend over the Internet ( http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/8040178.stm). He actually flew from Frankfurt to the UK to commit this murder because he got angry that his messages were getting blocked. Now I know Nottingham has a reputation for a high rate of violent crime, but the blame here lies squarely in Germany!

Very nice street scene. The neighborhood doesn't look very naughty...

Yeah, agreed on leaving the colours. Nice contrast between the yellow and blue reflections and the shiny wall and grainy ground

LOL... Always blame the Germans... :-)... Good street shot... Was only saying last night on Richard Tysons' pic I'd like to do more of these type of pics but am a bit wary about taking photos in the street...

Bravo! Street photography is very challenging for me, too, for the same reasons. Well done!!!

This is very nice. I like the reflected colors on the sidewalk from the lights. I tried to take a photo of the parking lot at the grocery store last evening, but gave up the parking lot was too busy. Tried something else instead.

Great pic! I love the colors and the reflections. And that the name of the street on the building, close to the ground?? We don't have that here...
