Recently I've spent lots on clothing, but I still turn to some old favourites. I have these boots that I wear often. They probably need replacing - the soles are wearing thin and the laces have been replaced with something garish - but I can't help but think that their charm increases with age.
I planned on shooting the boots differently as I had an image in mind, but it didn't turn out how I expected it to. Instead, after some heavy editing, I ended up with this shot.
I got my first speeding ticket last week. I remember speeding slightly to overtake a ridiculously slow driver, but more fool me as I went past a police van. At the time I thought "oh bugger" but thought nothing more of it, but low and behold a few days later a letter of prosecution arrived in the post. So, it's my first three points on my license or a course on speeding that costs more than the fine and involves taking a day off work. I'll take the points, thanks.
I just want to add that I really appreciate the support I had recently over my 'mistake'. That debate went too far (largely in my absence), and it's a shame that some people had to get personal. Some people are bullies; they feel tough behind the protective shield of the Internet, acting like 14 year-old teenagers on Facebook, but I guarantee they wouldn't be so aggressive to my face!
The lady who began that debate contacted me personally to apologise too and I did likewise, and it was the impetus to come back so soon. This time I've decided to take on a lower profile on this site. I'll be less 'vocal', and will let my images do the talking for me.

I do think the boots have appeared to taken on a charisma of their own by being worn down by you. It's a very lovely thing to think about. It's like when you see a hole in your shirt-- you're annoyed, but then you remember you got it because your cat grabbed you through it when she was a kitten. Glad you're staying too, but I suppose I'll miss your talkative side that I've been learning about by reading your descriptions. :)
YEY, your back! Love these, shoes are such a representations of ourselves, I've yet to do justice to a shot of any of mine (though I do like my Hubby's in yesterday's pic), great shot and processing yet again, welcome home Vik!
I'm glad you're stayin 'cause personally I believe you don't really have to be on sabbatical. You accepted your mistake and apologised, that's more than enough. We all do make mistakes... what's important is we acknowledge and learn from it.
Very nice, I like the clarity of the stiching on the boots. Did you shoot this against the stark white background, or did you achieve that via editing? If via editing, would you mind saying how? It's something I tried to achieve here ( http://365project.org/ashleyjwilson/2011/2011-02-16) but had some trouble getting just right.
@ashleyjwilson Hi, yes I edited it quite heavily. I used the brush tool in Lightroom by over-exposing the surrounding areas. I was quite heavy-handed to be honest as I should have done much of the work when I took it (by, as you highlight, using a white background), but I didn't envisage this when I initially shot it.
Vikdaddy, I like the pic very much, and the sentiment about hanging onto old boots as they gain character - I hope you have a good cobbler to keep them going. Glad you stayed because of your excellent shots, but also because of how helpful you are, as seen in your response to Ashley @ashleyjwilson. Goodo.
Good effort mate. Ive done some over exposing using that brush in LR, can be very pain staking task at times, unless im doing it wrong. No idea what i missed in this thread ...as didnt catch up and nows it gone. perhaps better i didnt know, not that i would think anything different of course. All good though, you know theres a nuff people who appreciate your work.
Keep the awesome photos coming!
am glad all's well that end's well on the other matter, btw.......
