Cutwork in the Marches! by w3n6y

Cutwork in the Marches!

I really love this blending of English and Welsh styles. In Wales and Cornwall there is a tradition of unglazed pottery with piercings and cutouts and in England of glazed porcelain and china decorated with three dimensional flowers, leaves and fruit. In this piece from Clee Hill the potter has combined both traditions. the little pot is pierced and cut but it is also decorated with cutwork flowers and leaves. The clay used for the applied work was presumably white and has been coloured right through in pink and green. the whole thing is unglazed outside but glazed inside to make it hold water.

A lovely piece. I like all the information about the different pottery traditions and am going to bookmark this to email to my auntie Betty (http://365project.org/quietpurplehaze/365/2012-04-28) who lives in Cornwall and will be very interested,

I am glad you enjoyed the information and the picture. If you like, I have some more pictures of examples of Welsh, Cornish and English examples. On looking more closely at the largest piece of English cut-work the applied flowers and leaves are made in exactly the same way as these. If you would like copies of the pictures then I can put them on my timeline, or e-mail them to you.
