Making three tier cake stands for my mother-in-laws birthday, so with great excitement I got out the diamond drill bit I brought yesterday - bugger, every time I tried, zip, it shot straight across the plate!!! Never one to give up without a fight, it was straight back to google & youtube where there was a lady using a drill press. All excited at how easy it looked off to the hardware I rushed to buy one, I got it home & set it up in the shed, marked out the centre of the plate, popped it under the press &....oops, can you see my problem??? The dinner plates are way too big to fit. Anyway, it works a treat on the saucers & I did manage to transform my two tier stand to three tiers. Jasper was rather impressed with the finished product :)
The long & the short of it is that after all that I'll have to wait until hubby gets back next week so he can do the drilling & on the up side, he now has a drill press :)
I love your collage and idea. I have a manual drill and the diamond drill bit and it's much easier, even though not as sophisticated as the one of your husband. It's great when the drill has speed control, so you can use the slow speed at the beginning.
May I ask you where did you get the hardware pieces, or what is the name for them?
Good luck.
@tonydebont thank you once again Tony, I did enjoy the process & hope to have some finished very soon.
@myhrhelper thanks Kathy, google & youtube give us so many great ideas & when you need 15 of these for a party you have to try to do it on a budget :)
as an update people, I am off op shopping today to source more plates which should give me the incentive to get going on them & get all 15 or so done!!
@anazad511 I look forward to seeing what you do with them then :) I stumbled on them by just looking up 3 tier plate stands on ebay, until then I didn't realise you could buy them.
I appreciate the story of how -- and isn't this always the way? -- a 10-minute project becomes an hour or two! Found this post as the only other post with the tag 'drill press'!!

@anazad511 I'm still persevering with the drills & I have a diamond drill bit too but need to spend some more time on it! I got the hardware off ebay, I just searched for 3 tier plate stands & came up with these, the sellers were fantastic & they arrived super fast, I'm posting a link here for you - http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/181030716178?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649#ht_1687wt_1141
