The Electric Palace opened in Harwich in 1911 and still shows films at weekends although it closed in 1956 after being in operation for 45 years but reopened in 1981 as a members-only cinema run by volunteers. It had separate entrances for the two original ticket prices, sixpence and one shilling (equivalent to 2.5 pence and 5 pence in decimal currency) but today’s prices are somewhat higher, as shown in the notice on the pay-box, which also offers temporary membership for a single performance. Those were the days, when “going to the pictures” was a great night out and the rather fanciful decoo-style cinemas really did look like palaces
Thanks everyone. I'd like to get in there some time as I believe they still have some of the old equipment. Its ages since I've seen the inside of a projection room.
Such a classic look so attractive. I like the insets too.
So civilised going to the pictures in the past. That great mid break for ice creams and leg stretch, unlike today when they expect people and children to sit forever.
