No more coal fires, no more choking fog ... no more snuggling in front of an open grate at this time of year ... but chimneys still dominate the skyline in many areas which have managed to escape the rush to modernity.
Nice shot Arthur - but surely you can't miss the smogs that went with these chimneys and killed many many people? Although I agree that my solar panels are not so photogenic.
@fueast ... Quite so, Alison. I also remember the London "Pea-soupers" of the 1940s when I saw bus conductors walking in front of the vehicles with a torch, and the icy draughts that came into our living rooms as the air was drawn in under the doors by the convection currents of hot smoke rising up the chimney. We must have been a lot hardier then, although as you rightly said, the death toll was much higher.
Thanks everyone for all your very kind comments. I was walking home after shopping on a very cold day and the sight of those chimneys reminded me of times past ... and my little p&s camera jumped out of my pocket to illustrate the caption that came into my head. I am primarily a journalist, rather than a photographer, and know that if there is something worth saying, there likely to be a picture in it.
