Heart of the Neighborhood, Surabaya, East Java, Indonesia

Much of local life revolves around the neighborhood mosque.

Since it's Friday--and Ramadan is in full swing--the muezzin's plaintive call to prayer came particularly early.

By 4AM many families were up and about preparing a meal (known as sufhoor) to break the fast at sunrise.

There seems to be a mosque on every corner in the crowded neighborhood where we're staying.
I pass at least 10 on my morning walks.

We were told to 'Come back Monday' when we showed up at the immigration office to pick up our promised visa extensions.

I've spent a great deal of time exploring this little neighborhood and am ready to hop on my bike and head for Bali.

Keeping my fingers crossed for an efficient civil servant on Monday.
