Kaka

Kaka are large, forest-dwelling parrots, native to New Zealand. Unfortunately they are in decline due to predators and deforestation. This was in the native bird section of the zoo. I was really surprised how colourful they are. This particular one was surprisingly friendly and did sit on my shoulder for short time.
They are a beautiful bird.. hope he did not stick his claws in...

You can see the hint of colour on his crimson chest! There are many of these birds in our Stewart Island.
