Starlings at the pier again by yrhenwr

Starlings at the pier again

Another from the December starling shoot at the pier. I use one eye to look through the viewinder and the other to see what's happening beyond the frame. I saw a group of starlings higher and to the right and guessed they were about to join the murmuration, so I delayed pressing the shutter for a second or two. Hope you can see it happening here. Might be clearer on black.
Great b&w capturte. Always loves when there is a movement in the picture

I always wonder how can so many of them coexist...

Great capture of this traffic jam up in the sky!

@ludwigsdiana Thanks Diana.. it never jams, it just keeps moving, Slowly places get filled up under the pier then the pattern begins to collapse. Birds are seen on the horizonal structures on the top of the pier as they wait their turn to go to the roost sites. A few years ago a mathematician calculated that each starling only needs to watch 7 nearby ones for the system to work, but I've not come across any confirmation of this.

@domenicododaro I think they have highly developed mathematics! See my response to Diana above.

@helenhall I have taken a few hundred shots I guess... not as many as a thousand. It takes me a while to check/ save/delete them which is why I have had some new ones to show recently. You're not so far away Helen, you could come over here and I'd be happy to take you to the pier to see them.

@gigiflower Thanks for that link Sam. They seem like locusts munching their way through vegetation at speed... except the vegetation seems to be still there after they have passed.
