Aberystwyth Arts Centre by yrhenwr

Aberystwyth Arts Centre

For a small seaside town Aberystwyth is an amazing place. The Arts Centre shown here has 3 galleries, theatre, cinema, dance studio, concert hall, 2 cafes, bar, coffee bar, craft shop, stunning views over the town and out to sea, sunsets, chemical and well-used dark room ... and so much more. I spend a lot of time in this place but, to reassure you, I don't spend any time on the dance floor! Part of the university and a fabulous resource for the town.
Love the composition of this shot.

Very nice! The alignment of those pics must have taken quite a while.

@fbailey Fortunately I had nothing to do with hanging those pics!

@newbank What's the intrigue: the arts centre? or this shot?

@joansmor Thanks Joan

I'm intrigued by what the women is thinking about looking at the art and what the couple at the table are talking about.

@newbank Oh I see... I don't think I could have photographed them in such a way that your questions would be answered! :-)

I'm trying to figure out if I have been there or not....is it in the Uni or just has a similar look? Beautifully shot and love the mono.

a fabulous image and great detail.

@ruthmouch Thanks Ruth. It is in one of the many Uni buildings on Penglais campus. At the top of the steps that lead up from around the centre of the main road in. next to the Hugh Owen Library. Or to go round to the back way in by following the road up and round to the left to the visitor car park.

Interesting to know how important this town must be. I tried to find out how to pronounce this and this is what I got.....ab-uh-RIST-with

looks and sounds like a great place

A great composition. Indeed a very important resource for the citizens!

I mean, the Arts Center. The composition is a resource for us at 365 ;)

@maggiemae Yes its an important regional centre.. even has the National Library of Wales, which is entitled to receive all publications in Welsh and English; a very useful resource for the students with archives going way back. As for how to say the name of the town what you have written is how English speakers often pronounce it. The second syllable (uh) is more of an 'aerrr' (as in 'aero` but with a rolling r at the end) and the last syllable definitely not a bit like the English 'with' but 'oooith' because 'w' is a vowel `oo` in Welsh and the last consonant 'th' is pronounce thhh as in thing, not as in this or that!. Oh yes and the y after aber is 'uh'. So Abaerrr uhst oo uh thh, to exaggerate only slightly!

@domenicododaro Indeed Domenico and unusual for small town UK as a whole. With the National Library next door its a place for scholars! But Wales is culturally a very different place to England and small towns (which might be no larger than a village in England) are important centres for the area in which they are situated. The university also has a swimming pool, open to all and without which I'd be lost even though there is another public pool in town. Too kind of you to describe the image as a resource for 365 members. Thank you! You might be interest to learn that the University was the first in Wales, founded by the Aberystwyth towns-people in the 19th century by public subscription! A seafront hotel failed and they bought the building to house the University. It is now known locally as Old College, subsequently enlarged and extended and has featured in a number of my shots on 365.

I really like how this composition follows and breaks the rule of thirds all in one shot! The black and white also captures the feel you get in an art gallery- that quiet hush of inspiration that stimulate you to think of lofty things.

Great leading line!
January 17th, 2019
@yrhenwr I'm really going to practice that! So good to hear!

and aside from that, I'm reading "Sleepers Castle' by Barbara Erskine. Totally fascinating with Welsh history!
January 17th, 2019
@maggiemae I don't know 'Sleepers Castle' but I'll have to find it so as to check its version of Welsh History! Hope the pronunciation of Welsh is going well

I never visited Wales, unfortunately. But your description makes me think of a most civilized place!

I love this split view capture. Gorgeous light too.

Interesting composition. I like these two parallel streams of light.

looks like an interesting space. Great that there is new life and design and investment along the welsh coast. I guess that is the benefit to having the University. Glad you make good use of it.

Maybe a moment frozen in time but there is much to explore. To have such a resource available is a blessing. Very few smaller towns in this country have the piece of mind to show that art and culture are vital.
