This is so much more like the effect I wanted on yesterday's get pushed chess set.
I asked an expert's advice who suggested the softness and halo were the result of editing. I tend to use what came with Windows 10 (I know I don't have a Mac or PS!). I do use ribbet.com occasionally so played with a whole lot of stuff not tried before.
Now I need to practice technique to get white background but apart from that - as a friend on here often types Happy Dance.
Please don't feel a need to comment, this is here so I can say thanks to my new mentor!!
@northy THANK YOU!! I will now practice on exposure and stuff to perfect that whiteness in the background! @summerfield Don't feel any guilt at doing processing- is this progress?
@sandy2017 thank you, same image reprocessed. I'm not a fan of Editting and processing but am coming to trealiuse necessary at times! @summerfield red wine opened, cheers!!!
Nicely done! It's always good to know how to get a clean white background, but just remember it creates a completely different effect... more stark and graphic... the variations of white in this type of image I think make for a much more atmospheric result :). My editing tools let me see where I have pure white and pure black... for something like this I would probably push the whites just to where I had a tiny bit of pure white and left the rest... but it all depends what type of image you are after :)

@joansmor that is so true!!!!
