Are you using auto focus on your lens (AF) or manual (M) ?
Depending on the lens type, it may have a little button on the side to toggle between the two. Then you can twist the lens ring (probably not the proper name - I'm learning too!) to get the intended part of the subject clearly in focus as you look through it.
