Elk in Velvet

This is an elk in velvet. They drop their antlers every year and grow new antlers in the spring. When they are first growing they are covered with skin and blood vessels which supply nutrients for growth. They look like Mickey Mouse antlers! They gradually harden and the elk rub the old skin, etc. off on trees. They are then left with beautiful, polished antlers.
Beautiful animal, great shot. I didn't know that about the antlers.
